NZMP Organic Advantage

Organic farming in New Zealand leverages the natural goodness of our land to produce certified organic dairy products that are closer to nature and trusted by consumers.

Natural Advantage

  • Grass Fed / Pasture Raised: Our cows graze outdoors on grass all year, as nature intended.
  • Free from: Our Organic dairy farms and associated milk is free from synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fertilisers, antibiotics*, growth hormones, and rBST. *market regulation specific.
  • Animal wellbeing: Cows are the heart of every dairy farm, and their wellbeing means everything to our farmers. Fonterra’s independently certified Cared for Cows Standard represents our approach to animal wellbeing — an approach that ensures our cows are valued and treated with respect throughout their lives, ensures that they are healthy, productive, and well cared for.
  • Non-GMO: All our organic dairy ingredients are non-GMO and non-GMO project verification can be requested.
  • Carbon Zero Capable: All our Organic dairy ingredients are carbonzero™ capable with our salted butter already having it’s carbonzeroTM certification.

Animal Wellbeing

  • Animal wellbeing on organic farms is maintained through comprehensive preventative planning which incorporates nutritional supplementation and herbal support as required
  • Effective preventative health programmes reduce the number of animals that need treatment. However, if an animal does become unwell, there are many certified organic animal treatments which can be used to support a speedy recovery
  • Fonterra believes​ a strong farmer-veterinarian relationship supports animal wellbeing on-farm, and we encourage our farmers to develop and implement an Animal Wellbeing Plan with their veterinarian

Certification Advantage

NZMP Organics adhere to a range of global organic standards covering our farms, factories, ingredients, and finished goods. Our internationally recognised certification combined with our global regulatory expertise, enables us to deliver ingredients that meet our customers’ local or international certification, religious and regulatory requirements.

 

Fonterra organic ingredients and products are independently certified by AsureQuality (a New Zealand Government owned certification organisation) to internationally accepted organic standards. AsureQuality is an accredited IFOAM member holding ISO17065 and ISO17020 and is an approved third-party agent for the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries under the New Zealand Official Organic Assurance Programme.

Environmental Advantage

The vast landscapes, rich volcanic soils, and temperate climate of New Zealand are an ideal combination for organic farming. We’re proud of the farmers in our co-operative who have gone that step further to achieve organic certification. By drawing on this rich resource and building on years of farming experience, we can achieve….

  • A lower average stocking rate: the average organic dairy farm in New Zealand has a lower stocking rate per farm of 300 cows compared to 440 cows in the average non-organic herd.
  • “A sustainable increase in profitability, with a lower environmental footprint”: as stated in the NZ Organic Sector Market Report, based on an independent NZ case study of Pāmu dairy farms undergoing conversion.
  • Maintained animal health metrics: our farmers have reported since converting fully to organic that they have maintained or improved animal health metrics including production per cow and reproductive performance
  • Lower environmental footprint: our farmers have reported lower nitrogen losses and reduced greenhouse gasses per hectare since converting fully to organic. As stated in the NZ Organic Sector Market Report based on an independent NZ case study of Pāmu dairy farms undergoing conversion these reductions were measured as:
    • 29-49% lower nitrogen losses per hectare
    • 30-35% reduced greenhouse gases per hectare
