Sarcopenia
A leading cause of loss of independence in older age due to muscle mass decline.
A leading cause of loss of independence in older age due to muscle mass decline.
Common amongst elderly, sarcopenia displays silently as age-related weakness and muscle wasting. Without enough protein and activity, normal growth and break-down of muscle becomes unbalanced, leading to wasting and weakness.
Late stage sarcopenia can lead to loss of independence, which is a leading fear in older populations. Eating to meet nutritional requirements and exercising regularly is important to avoid muscle wasting and provide a strong framework to support healthy recovery when necessary. Getting enough high-quality protein in the diet is important to maintain muscle mass and provide a buffer in case of illness.
Severe sarcopenia limits quality of life, increases fall risk, and increases overall mortality. Acute sarcopenia can precipitate due to hospitalisation for an illness or surgical procedure. The inflammatory burden from surgery, combined with muscle disuse often leads to acute sarcopenia. The more severe, the larger the likelihood of poor recovery.
Close management of nutrition with high protein, nutrient dense foods and supplements contribute to the avoidance and reversal of sarcopenia.

We recognise that Breast milk is the best nutrition for a baby. It's full of everything a baby needs to grow and develop in a healthy way, and gives children the very best start in life.
Before using infant formula instead of breast milk, consumers should first speak to a health care professional.
A decision not to breastfeed, or to introduce partial bottle feeding, could reduce supply of breast milk and be a difficult decision to reverse.
