The Fonterra Sustainability Roadmap: Creating goodness for generations
The Fonterra Sustainability Roadmap is our path that helps us work towards our ambition to be net zero in 2050 and contribute to a nature positive future1. It takes a broader view, beyond a focus on emissions reduction, and includes climate adaptation, nature and animal wellbeing. It is the work of Fonterra’s sustainability, farming and science experts, and can support customers to define their own ambitions, as well as make progress toward their own climate targets and nature outcomes.
Our climate targets and ambition
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the planet. We believe all businesses must take an active role in creating the solutions and actions to address change. We believe we need to play our part in reducing emissions to work towards the global goal of a 1.5°C future.
In November 2023, we announced our emissions reductions targets for 2030 and an ambition to be net zero by 2050. Since then, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)2 has validated Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited's near term targets3.
Energy & Industrial (E&I) absolute reduction and engagement

We commit to reduce our absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50.4% by FY2030 from a FY2018 base year.4
78.2%
We commit that 78.2% of our suppliers and customers by emissions, covering purchased goods and services, capital goods, upstream and downstream transportation and distribution, business travel and processing of sold products will have science-based targets by FY2028.

Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) guidance4 specific intensity reduction

We commit to reduce Scope 1 and 3 FLAG GHG emissions from dairy by 30.0% per tonne of fat-and-protein-corrected milk (FPCM) by FY2030 from a FY2018 base year.5
No deforestation
We also commit to no deforestation across our primary deforestation-linked commodities, with a target date of no later than 31st December 2025.6

1 A global societal goal defined as to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 on a 2020 baseline and achieve full recovery by 2050. 3 Fonterra completed the sale of its consumer and associated businesses to Lactalis on 31 March 2026. The scale of the divestment requires us to re-assess our near-term emissions targets, which we are in the process of doing.
