New Zealand Dairy Claims
Our cows are grass-fed and spend over 350 days of a year on pasture, which is more than anywhere else in the world2. With grass growing year-round, the temperate New Zealand climate allows our cows to spend most of their time outside.
Animal wellbeing means everything to our farmers. Their cows are valued and treated with care and respect. With high health and welfare standards, our cows live longer, productive lives.*
Our New Zealand milk is third-party certified against our Fonterra Grass & Pasture Fed Standard and Cared for Cows Standard annually by AsureQuality, an independent Conformity Assessment Body (CAB).
1 Grass-fed means cows mainly grazing on grass and crops in paddocks where they roam. Some farmers may include supplementary feed to support cows’ nutrition. Visit NZMP.com/grass-fed for more information.
2 Of the top 15 dairy exporting countries (based on annual dairy product export volumes in 2023 and including New Zealand), only Ireland operates a similar pasture-based model to New Zealand. Data in the study, O'Brien et al. 2018, shows that Irish dairy cows have access to pasture, on average, 255 days per year. The Bord Bia (Irish Food Board) 2023 statistics show an average of 240 days on pasture. Fonterra’s annual data shows that on average, in New Zealand, our farmers' cows spend more than 350 days grazing outside on pasture.
*The Cared for Cows Claim is not available in North America.
Organic Dairy Claims
New Zealand’s temperate climate means our organic cows spend their time outdoors, grazing on grass3 year-round.
We farm without antibiotics, GMOs, synthetic pesticides and fertilisers.
Our organic dairy ingredients are independently certified to a wide range of leading organic standards.
3Grass is defined as grass, grass silage, hay and forage crops (including legumes and brassicas). To help support cows’ nutrition and welfare requirements, some farmers may use organic supplementary feed (from local and or imported sources) and temporarily remove cows from pasture.
