Up to half of hospital patients are malnourished when admitted. Surgery utilises a lot of the body's existing resources, and in some instances, cannot proceed if the person is not nourished and strong enough to handle the additional strain.

 

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols propose that patient recovery is directly impacted by food consumed before surgery. For example, reduced mobility and appetite increases a patient's risk of developing sarcopenia after hip surgery. A high protein, high calorie diet in the weeks prior to surgery can help reduce risk and ensure patients have a good nutritional status to contribute to healing.

Post-surgery care with high quality protein for wound healing

Post-surgery, the body is in a complex state of healing, which results in an intensified demand for nutrients. Nutrient deficiency impedes the healing process and several vitamins and nutrients contribute to a supported healing process.
