To help brands provide consumers with highly sought-after edible solutions to their everyday levels of stress, we have recently launched a new ingredient NZMP Milk Phospholipids, into the global active lifestyle market.

"By extending our portfolio into the mental wellness space, we’re helping food brands tap into new consumers’ needs, such as mood-enhancement and cognitive performance under stress — issues that have recently amplified due to the pandemic. We know this innovation will be a big hit for the market and our initial industry feedback has been very positive,” said Charlotte Ortiz, global marketing and communications manager at Fonterra.

What are phospholipids?

Concentrations of phospholipids, which are fundamental building blocks of our brain cells, decline as we age2, potentially impacting cognitive functions such as mental alertness, focus and concentration. However, phospholipids can be supplemented through foods and digested dietary phospholipids are easily absorbed by the body.

Naturally present in milk, milk phospholipids are complex lipids clinically proven to help manage the effects of stress, allowing consumers to stay focused and positive under stress.

It is backed by human clinical studies that have shown to improve mood and focus in healthy consumers with occasional stress.

“The range of milk phospholipids, and in particular phosphatidylserine and sphingomyelin, can not only help balance stress by reducing the release of the stress hormone cortisol, but also stimulates production of key neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, and contribute to the protective effect of the nerve covering, to improve nerve signalling. Phospholipids are central components of all brain cells and are critical in brain cell development, maintenance, and function.  In addition, milk phospholipids have anti-inflammatory effects through the immune system. More research is needed to better understand the details of these actions, but this is a really exciting area.” explains Alastair MacGibbon, Principal research scientist at Fonterra.

Made from non-GMO, rBST-free, grass-fed cow’s milk, NZMP Milk Phospholipids are high in beneficial whey protein which supports muscle build and recovery, and low in both lactose and sugar content. This clean-tasting, dairy solution is suitable for delivering multi-functional benefits to many food and beverage products.

For those who are after products that can support mood and help alleviate anxiety and nerves, there is a need to look beyond comfort foods, which are typically considered stress relieving but can also lead to bad health as they tend to contain high levels of salt, sugar and fat.

During the last 18 months, the Fonterra R&D team has developed several ingredients-based applications made with milk phospholipids – such as nutritional bars and ready-to-mix powders - that can help our customers to tap into the growing opportunity of the healthy and functional snacking segment.

Download the concept cards below and explore how you can incorporate NZMP Milk Phospholipids into bars and ready-to-mix beverages.

NZMP Milk Phospholipids are compatible with many of the brand’s other health and wellness ingredients, to help offer functionality that goes beyond stress management.

“As one of the largest dairy companies in the world, we are able to give brands both the functional ingredients and formulation expertise they need. We do this by helping our partners innovate, collaborate, explore health research, and develop compelling new products that address current and future health needs. Dairy ingredients are new to the mental wellbeing space, so we are excited to work with brands to deliver new solutions for this health segment to consumers around the world,” said Charlotte Ortiz.
