Setting ambition and targets

In this phase you start to get specific about what your organisation will commit to.

What's your ambition?

Once you’ve successfully identified your sustainability priorities, a good next step is to set your emissions targets. Use the following content, tools and references as a guide.

Learn how our sustainability commitments could support your own ambitions, how Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) can help you stay on track, and how to build consensus within your business for your sustainability journey.

How Fonterra's targets may help you

Before we move on, you might like to see what our targets are. New Zealand already has one of the most sustainable sources of dairy ingredients in the world, but we are committed to reducing our on-farm emissions intensity by 30% by 2030. New Zealand dairy’s low emissions starting point may enable customers like you, who have dairy as a significant input in your goods, to reduce your carbon footprint by choosing NZMP’s NZ sourced ingredients.

The Fonterra Climate Roadmap: Our strategy towards net zero 2050, outlines our current emissions position, what makes us different and our action plan in order to deliver to our ambition of net zero 2050.

Understanding SBTi and FLAG

The Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) is a global standard for corporate emissions target setting. Forest Land and Agriculture Guidance (FLAG) is the newly-introduced method within SBTi specifically for companies within land-intensive sectors.

Climate science is complex and constantly evolving, and we expect that expert guidance and measurement methodologies will evolve too.  Fonterra's 2030 targets are science based, SBTi aligned* and follow the FLAG guidance.

*Fonterra has committed to set near-term company-wide emissions reductions in line with the latest science from SBTi. Fonterra is currently in the process of submitting its Scope 1 and 2, and Scope 1 and 3 FLAG GHG emissions reduction targets to SBTi for validation.

Checking in with your organisation

By gaining internal alignment and support, you can reach agreements that helps to build momentum for your sustainability journey. Our tool can help you build a case so you can continue to move forward.

Set your targets

Organisations like yours are setting targets, so now is a great time to consider setting yours. Setting emissions targets can be a  daunting, complex and lengthy process.  It’s about understanding the sources of emissions that are ‘material’ to your organisation, how you want to be seen within your industry, and calling-out those things you will tackle over the longer term to achieve your targets.

To help you, we have pulled together the benefits of setting targets and 2 key resources to look at which you may find useful when considering setting targets.

The next step is to assess and verify your impact, or you may like to go back and review your priorities
